Where Do The Odorous House Ants Come From?

Odorous house ants, also known as sugar ants, are small black or brown ants. They get their name because when these ants are crushed, they emit a sickly sweet smell that resembles rotten coconut. Sugar ants are generally harmless, but can cause a huge nuisance if they live on your property. If they find a food source, they will exploit it. This means that they can contaminate food in your pantry. Nobody wants to deal with little ants marching around their living space. Sugar ants can be difficult to get rid of, but the good news is that Independent Pest Solutions has excellent methods for odorous house ant control.

How Do I Know I Have Odorous House Ants And What Do I Do?

Sugar ants often build their nests outdoors. They build their nests in places such as under logs, rocks, and pavement. Odorous house ants also build their nests inside of structures. Some places that you might discover one of their nests include near heat sources like heaters and hot water pipes, in the floors or walls, and in crevices beside sinks and cabinets. Although sugar ants, like their name implies, prefer sweet foods, they are opportunistic scavengers and will eat almost any food they can find.

What To Look For?

Pest control for odorous house ants is often difficult. One step that our professional pest control technicians take to deal with them is sealing gaps and cracks that could be allowing the ants to access voids and the interior of the building. We know where to strategically place bait traps so that the ants will fall for them, and we know what type of bait to put in the traps depending on the time of year. If you try to set traps or use insecticide on your own to deal with your ant problem, you could end up making it worse. We are highly experienced with eliminating ant infestations, and you can count on us for all of your ant pest control needs

Odorus Ants FAQs.

We’ve had odorous ants for a while. Where do they keep coming from?

Typically, “sugar ants” are actually odorous house ants and do not disappear and reappear. Using over-the-counter treatments often leads to the fragmentation of their main nest into smaller, scattered nests that eventually increase in population, creating the illusion of a new problem in a different location. In actuality, the original issue never truly went away.

How does your treatment address the issue of the ineffectiveness of over-the-counter solutions in getting rid of odorous house ants?

Our main treatment is a delayed-action, non-repellent solution. This works by allowing the ants to spread the treatment around as they move through it without realizing it. Since only a small part of the nest is foraging at any given time, this allows for a larger portion of the colony to be exposed to the treatment before it takes effect and they scatter to escape.

How do keep them away?

Aside from trimming plants away from the house, the most effective way to prevent odorous house ant infestation is to regularly apply a repellent on the outside of the home, which will deter their intrusion.
